Meet Felipe!
UPDATE 1/12/21:
Felipe had his last set of vaccines yesterday and he did great, didn't even flinch :)
We are looking for a foster or adopter for him who actually has dog knowledge and/or training experience because he has a little "quirk" of vocalizing/barking when he needs something or is insecure. We have a dog trainer/behaviorist who will be happy to do phone consult to make sure his foster/adopter is guided on proper correction, but when we contacted him today and showed him a few videos he had this to say:
".....Thank you for the videos of Felipe. I didn't see much other than a very young and contextually nervous/unsure pup that happens to express himself vocally in such situations. He also does seem to recover quickly, which is a good sign. Little hints of social recruiting (=> guarding) of the handler as well. So food based-training/conditioning should be all that's necessary at the moment (perhaps more later, as Dutchies can certainly be a handful as they get older). Let me know if there's anything you'd like me to do, but otherwise, just lots of marker sound -> food pairings (or toys) when out and about with him."
If you are ready to adopt or foster a LOVING, funny, active, smart, handsome pup, who is currently in the 10-14 weeks of age and approx 15-18lbs and will likely grow up to be in the 40-60lbs (likely more in the 45-55lb range), we are accepting applications from foster or adopters who can do the following:
1) You are ready to spend time training, as it's imperative we socialize and train and help Felipe overcome his insecurity from whatever experience he had encountered in the streets of baja Mexico when he was trying to survive as a young pup, which likely led to his little personality (look at the videos attached to his bio to see his little "bark communication" scenario).
2) We prefer a home with a yard, because during this first month of training it will make it hard with neighbors who won't understand his communication skills. So let's keep things easy and not stressful, which would be a normal home with space to not worry about neighbors, as he learns to stop this trait (he is NOT a barker or yappy dog lets be clear about that, just vocalises when he may need something or expressing something).
4) He will do great with continued exposure to people and dogs on leash, like walks around neighborhoods, car rides, pet stores to meet new people, people coming and going from home (like family members) for continued exposure to positive people.
UPDATE 1-5-21: This is what Felipe's foster family has to say about him:
"Felipe is a quick learner, although he does want to learn his own way. He barks when he’s playing and when he wants attention while he’s in his crate. So far he has not gone potty in his crate, he has chew toys to keep him busy and a bed he likes to sleep on. He doesn’t like to chase balls but he likes to chase chew toys and run around the backyard with them. He is VERY food motivated and we are working with him to be calm when he eats his breakfast and dinner. He is a very sweet dog and loves attention, he also loves walks and exercising constantly!"
ORIGINAL RESCUE STORY:
This adorable Shepherd blend was rescued from the streets of San Felipe, baja Mexico by a San Diego family. They soon realized they were NOT prepared for a dog, let alone a puppy, so they sought help from ARWOB. Thankfully we had a foster family with space during holidays and they were able to take him in.
It is obvious Felipe is a Shepherd mix, as he has characteristics both physically and behaviorally of a German Shepherd Dog — smart and always on the go. He is good with cats, but can be over the top playful, so he may get slapped in his tracks by the feline fosters.
Felipe is NOT house trained yet. He just started his crate training and his foster family is showing him the ropes of leash walking. Therefore, we will ONLY consider adopters with time and experience, who can provide puppy training right away. He would love a home with a yard and another dog to play with, but a good active family would be great too. Having a Shepherd in an apartment setting is not the best, unless you have done puppy training before; especially because of the Shepherd whinny vocalization they are sometimes known for.
Like all puppies, Felipe is silly and active! He will neeed an adopter that is ready to do lots of house training and socialization with both people and other dogs, which can be hard during the pandemic.
Because of COVID-19, sterilization appointments have been difficult to schedule. Felipe has an appointment to be sterilized in the 92109 Pacific Beach area of San Diego on Friday 2/12/2021.
Felipe can be adopted as soon as 1/5/2021 but ONLY to local families in the San Diego area to ensure they are able to take him to his pre-scheduled surgery appointment and then pick him up at the end of the day after surgery. Therefore, please do NOT submit an application if you are not local to San Diego and able to attend the appointment shown above. If you would like to adopt and live outside of San Diego area, you are welcome to wait until his sterilization surgery has been completed to see if Felipe is still available at that time.
If you would like to adopt this handsome little man, please submit an application online at arwob.org
