UPDATE 3-27-21: Melon is amazing!
Dear applicants: Please make sure to read the updates below to know more back history about Melon, but as of today all we have to say is “Melon is the best!” Please DO NOT apply for him if you are not looking for a dog that will grow to be in the 75-90 pound range because he is a pretty hefty puppy AND we believe he is a Labrador, Shepherd and likely Pit Bull mix. If you have a breed restriction where you live or prefer to stay clear of the Pit Bull breed, then this boy is also NOT for you. Being a Baja stray, Melon is likely to have a degree of Pit Bull in him, but we can only assume.
Melon is a 4-5 month old, 40 pound puppy, who will grow to be 80 pounds (+/-). He is an “old soul” and is very laid back and hesitant when meeting new people. He is certainly not your typical happy-go-lucky pup UNTIL he knows you, then it is ON! He is besties with any dog, large or small, from the get go. He is completely fine with cats and does fabulous in his crate. He is not a barker and has not exhibited any separation anxiety, BUT he is definitely a protector and will alert you of a stranger (i.e. mail delivery, courier services), which makes him a big scaredy-cat. He always scares the delivery friends because they do not expect this goofy puppy to have such a “deep” bark. He is great on the leash (not really a puller) and is perfect on car rides. He would probably be best in a home with kids 12 years or older, or with well behaved children who will be gentle and not fast moving during the “get to know you” stage, since he can be fearful and nervous if something scares him.
UPDATE 3-12-21:
Melon is a very sweet boy, but he is scared of humans when he first meets them. Once he gets to know you, he melts in your hands! He is now in a foster in San Diego and we have seen a huge improvement in just a couple of days! He just needs to learn the world and meet more/new people and we know he will be great. We are happy to do a foster-to-adopt trial with the right family, who is interested in an XL breed pup that is fantastic with cats and dogs, but a little weary of people. He will initially bark and try to get away from new people, showing signs of being nervous, but after some baby talk and lots of petting, he will become your new BFF! He is not a bark dog, but he has a BIG bark, so he would be best in a home versus an apartment setting. He is crate trained and house trained already. We are looking for a family who would like to adopt Melon, who we believe will be the perfect family dog.
Melon will be neutered in the 92109 Pacific Beach area of San Diego on Wednesday, April 7, 2021. Melon will be available to meet potential adopters right away. However, priority will given to local area applicants. This will ensure they are able to take him to the pre-scheduled surgery appointment and then pick him up at the end of the day after surgery. Therefore, please do NOT submit an application if you are not local to San Diego and able to attend the appointments shown above. We may consider an out-of-area adopter IF they are willing/able to drive to San Diego to bring Melon to the appointment on 4/7 and to remain in the area so as to pick Melon up after the surgery. If you live outside of San Diego and are unable to make the drive, you are welcome to wait until his sterilization surgery has been completed to see if he is still available (please note that we do not place holds on any of our rescues).
ORIGINAL RESCUE STORY:
Melon was rescued from a ranch where he was left tied up and neglected for the first 2 months of his life. Consequently, he can have trust issues when meeting people. He has significantly improved since being rescued, but he will need an experienced adopter. If you are an experience dog adopter and would like to give Melon the loving forever home he deserves, please complete an online adoption application at www.arwob.org
