|
He had a physical exam and is healthy. He does have luxated knees but most small breeds have this problem. He needs to lose weight, about a pound since he is a little chunky and very tiny. He wasn't neutered until recently nor had he been to the vets but he is in excellent health and surprisingly has no dental problems.
Taco is a rescue from Tecolotlan Jalisco, a small town in Mexico between Puerto Vallarta & Guadalajara. He was given as a present to a girl when he was only 5 months which was back in July of 2003. The girl was not fond of him and the parents gave him away to a senior to 'protect' her and keep her company. However, they just left him alone and he lived his years in a backyard corral where he was given food once a day, a large bowl of water which was changed once every few days and some newspaper to sleep on. His home was in front of a school area so he heard and observed children through the fence everyday, but we were told he was just 'teased' by them and hence he is not very fond of children.
His owner passed away in 2009 and Taco was left alone in the house to 'protect' it while he was fed once a day by the Gardener who came to check up on him and the house for almost a year. When the an ARWOB supporter and volunteer happened to hear his story while in that small town in Mexico, she knew there was no reason for this and decided to offer him an opportunity at a loving life. She has been caring for Taco since July of 2010 He had the worst coat as it was full of car grease and dandruff since he used to sleep in an old run down car that was stored in his corral. Now he has a very healthy coat and loves his rescuer.
Taco has the typical Chihuahua personality. He also has come to LOVE anything he believes is his, like a nice warm comfy doggy bed, car seat or even a toy. He doesn't have the best of manners and like many Chihuahuas he will guard his 'belongings.' It's not as big deal as he is 'slower' and tinier than most dogs, but it is still something that an adopter needs to accept and be able to work with. We are looking for an adopter, foster home or foster to adopt home who would like to offer a home to a senior dog knowing about his behavioral issues, but who will also enjoy a dog that walks very well on a leash, enjoys his walks, sleeps 70% of the day and actually enjoys car rides. He will need an adopter who will take it slow and easy with him knowing he was never taught any manners. Or when he doesn't like something (i.e. bed removed or something) he will lightly growl and could be a bit 'snappy' at first towards people he doesn't know. After he knows who you are and once someone doesn't allow those things, he will improve and look for your hand so he can be petted and loved on. He is just very guarded of his surroundings at first.
Taco is a definite eye catching handsome pup - tiny and mighty! If you would like to meet with him and maybe offer him a home we would love to set up a play date. He can be dominant around dogs and submissive cats, but he is fine around cats who are not 'push-overs' or kittens who are not afraid of his 'intimidation' moves. We are looking for an adopter who knows or has experience with this type of behavior or is willing to work with his him to improve his behavior and bad manners. He is not a huge barker and only barks if a lot is going on. For the most part, he only barks when he hears other dogs barking, otherwise he is fairly calm and not very vocal.
