He is such a sweet, gentle old soul, who is super handsome!
If you are looking for an XL breed dog to be a family dog and have experience with GSD, then this guy is waiting to meet you!
Gunther sheds like all shepherds. However, he seems to have a pretty good mobility/ortho, as he has no problems moving around and has a pretty good gait considering he looks almost pure breed.
Gunther was owned as a guard dog along with another dog and sadly he was pretty aggressive towards Gunther, who never wanted to fight and kept loosing those encounters. He has several scars in his face and neck, hence his interesting look when you look at him closely. Gunther has exhibited ZERO guarding instincts and he is actually pretty shy and gentle. He is afraid of the 'world' as he is learning to live in it, instead of being a junk yard dog stuck in a yard without knowing the inside of a home, human companionship, etc.
He now has learned to walk on the leash and does fairly well. He is not great at following directions, as he can be afraid of new things like riding in cars. He doesn't jump into the car, so he needs to be placed in it and lifting 90 pounds into the car is NOT an easy task! Therefore, adopters need to think of the future when he grows older and is a senior dog that needs to go to frequent vet visits or if an emergency happens. He rides very well in the car though and he sits and stays put and tolerates the car rides just fine. We are confident as he gains more confidence in life around him and learns new things of this world, jumping into the car on his own may be conquered.
He is great with dogs both small and large breed and we haven't seen an issue towards males or females. We think he would be great with kids, but he has not been around them since being under our care. He should be good with kids, but being that he is shy, he may be nervous around fast moving little humans with waving hands that can make him nervous. We don't know how he would be with cats, but would suggest exercising caution around them.
Gunther would likely do best in a home with a yard environment instead of apartment living. Therefore, we will give preference to an applicant who is the best match for him.
