Emerald was rescued from the local Emerald Hills neighborhood in San Diego when we received a call from a local citizen who was hoping ARWOB could take in this pregnant girl into our care as they had seen her for a month or two and she had visited their property asking for food. They knew she was social and worried for her safety maneuvering the life of the canyons and streets as she was seen with 1-2 other cats who they hadn't seen for a while.
We took Emerald to the vet to have her spayed and it turned out the girl was not pregnant; she had already had her babies! Frantically, we contacted the good sam asking if they knew about it or knew where she could have had the babies. No information, so they started to help looking around the neighbors' properties. The ARWOB founder went to this neighborhood and started to talk to people around the area asking if they knew the cat or had heard kittens crying for their mama..,,, nothing. We ended up taking mom back to see if she could go find her babies and hopefully we could observe and follow her, but she didn't go anywhere for a couple of hours. Worried for her safety, we couldn't leave her behind and were devasted about the outcome for the babies.....wherever they may be.
Almost 48hrs later, we received a late night call from the good sam; her neighbor heard kittens and she walked over and crawled under the home to find the litter of babies. How did we know they were hers? They were probably 2-3 days old with their umbilical cords, and almost identical to sweet Emerald. We reunited the family of 5 kitts and momma Emerald immediately took over for their care. Sadly, one little baby didn't make it the first 24hrs, but the rest of the littles did amazing. Emerald was extraordinary and we were over the moon happy for the outcome!
Emerald is done nursing her babies and the babies will be 2 pounds the first week of July and hopefully sterilize so they can go home. Although Emerald was rescued as a stray, she’s wonderfully socialized, uses her litter box, and loves a good snuggle and pets and will provide loving companionship.. Emerald is a social love bug, is great with her kittens and we think she will be ok with cats, probably ok with dogs but unsure about both so we are happy to do a foster to adopt trial for Emerald to the right home if they have other pets, otherwise perhaps she can be adopted with one of her babies or as an only girl. The kittens must be adopted into a home with other cats or with a sibling.
To meet this family, please submit a cat adoption application online at arwob.org. We will contact applicants at the end of June/early July. We are looking for LOCAL SAN DIEGAN ADOPTERS ONLY.
