Meet Mandy and 'the Toms"!
In February, we received a plea to help a pregnant cat who was begging for food from people walking by the street in Tijuana. There were also two young Toms hanging around with her for a few days. The good sam thought perhaps they were a previous litter of hers and we mentioned we would take the trio into the group. Mandy and big Tom were easy to grab and place in carrier but little Tom was a bit shy and hesitant with people. The people who rescued and transported them to San Diego to be received by ARWOB, said nothing about them and when we received them we realized we actually may have 2 toms who are feral and they would need to be sterilized and released. However, we knew to give them time to make sure it wasn't just the stress of the change.
We sterilized the 3 kitties and had them in foster. We realized Big Tom has his smart streets of seeking human attention the minute he hears food, and, like all strays, they survive by being friendly, sweet and flirty. Mandy and little Tom also have this behavior, but more subtle.
We couldn't release these 2 young boys back to the streets of Tijuana knowing Big tom would be a wonderful home kitty being loved on and playing like a kitten as he loves to play with his feather toys and enjoys being petted, but also cautious about it or through short patterns of petting.
Little Tom is still shy/not as interested in people's touch, but easily approached and touched for pets. We think with someone with more time to focus on him and practice approach and petting would be great. He purrs like a maniac when being petted, but he really doesn't love to be picked up. When placed in carrier, no problem, but lap cat he is not. Big Tom, however, loves to be next to you and is a total goofy character..... Mandy, well Mandy is perfect in every way! :)
The 3 were in a foster at first with several cats and dogs and they ignored them although the boys would see other cat interactions, Mandy would prefer to be the only cat or only with 'her Toms'.
They would be fine with dogs, but would likely ignore them after the safe introduction.
Mandy would be great with kids.
Big Tom would love to play with toys and kids
Little Tom would likely want nothing to do with them if they approach him.
Mandy has always been a love. She loves to seek human attention, is low key. but very sweet, and now she is coming around and playing beautifully with her cat toys. Mandy chirps like a mama would and the boys come running to her for attention.
Anyone interested in adopting 3 kitties? The 3 are now fostered in the same foster home as the only pets in the home and Mandy could be adopted as the only cat while the Toms would be great if adopted together.
