Meet Dash!
Dash was adopted in February 2019 and unfortunately his family has asked to relinquish him back to ARWOB. His family recently had a new baby and they told us they no longer have the ability to train him and give him the attention and exercise he requires. They have stated that he has shown some anxiety around male strangers and will try to “nip” at their feet. They will continue to foster Dash until we can find a perfect adopter for him. We are seeking the right family for Dash, who can provide him with the training, guidance and the additional socialization he needs. We believe his behavior and reaction toward certain strangers can be corrected.
NOTE: Please do NOT apply to adopt Dash if you do not have the financial stability and dedication to enroll him with a trainer for assessment and to work with him in training. Dog training is not a miracle fix and change doesn’t happen in a week or a month. In order to curb certain behaviors and to correct lack of socialization, it needs to be done by an adopter who is going to take things seriously. They will need to dedicate the first 3-4 months to the required training for Dash while he is in his new home, so that he can become a well-behaved dog. We see cases like this too often where dogs are allowed to develop certain habits and personality traits that could have been prevented or curbed right from the start, and ultimately eliminated all together. An adopter could surely have a great life with him without training if they avoid new situations with people and other dogs, but the goal is to have a well-behaved dog by teaching him what is right and wrong, and correcting his bad habits. It helps if adopters enroll in dog training/assessment BEFORE bringing Dash home, so that things start off right on his first day in his new home. At the very least, the adopter should make an appointment with a dog trainer in order to start training the first week of having Dash in their home, so as to avoid allowing him to develop new bad habits or to continue with the bad habits developed with his current family (they continue to foster him until we are able to find him an appropriate new adopter). Prevention is the key and it’s much easier to prevent a problem/bad habit than it is to correct an already formed bad habit. This is not a big problem for a small breed, but adopters should still take dog training for small breeds as serious as owners of large breed dogs. It does not matter if it is a Maltese or a Pit Bull. ALL dogs need adopters who believe in dog training to avoid behavior issues that will result in relinquishment and rehoming. Thank you!
Here is what his current family has told us about Dash:
“Dash is affectionate, playful, energetic and loves his family. His favorite pastimes are walks, playing ball, and snuggling on the couch. He loves to play, but is rather mellow most of the time. He is very loving to his family and those he knows, but gets anxious around some strangers, particularly adult men. When scared, he will nip at pant legs/ankles/shoes. However, with proper time and attention, he is quite trainable. We think the best family/home for Dash would be a person who is an experienced dog owner, and ideally familiar with the Silky Terrier breed. It would be best if the family has the time and ability to train him and give him lots of exercise. Dash loves the outside, so a backyard would be ideal. We love Dash very much, but we have a new baby and we are unable to give him the exercise, attention and training needed to help him be the best dog he can be. We want the very best for this little man, and we hope to find his forever home!”
ORIGINAL RESCUE STORY:
Dash (fka Holden) was rescued from the streets of Tijuana in January 2019. He is now done with medical and ready for adoption! He has a very sweet personality that's true to his breed. He would be a great family dog or would do well with a working individual. Like any rescue dog, he will need a family who will enroll him in dog training. No matter how good of a pup, puppy manners and training is a must. We are seeking adopters with time to focus on Holden's wellbeing by spending time with him to train him to be the best he can be as he settles down in a forever home. This sweet boy is such a cuddle bug!
If you would like to foster or adopt this handsome little man, please fill out an online application at our website: www.arwob.org Don't wait!
