Karly is a 2-year-old German Shepherd mix (she may have some Husky in her) who is fully grown at 55 pounds. She was rescued mid-August in the streets of Baja, Mexico with many wounds on her body. She has recovered very nicely since then and is now learning how to live in a home with her foster parent.
She is a beautiful girl with a full coat of fur which is rather thick. Despite this, she doesn't shed excessively and, really, it's just nice running your hands through her beautiful, sleeky coat. She has a bushy tail that tends to curl (probably from some of the Husky in her). She has ears that usually stay pointed up, but sometimes they do lay flat as she can be submissive.
She plays gently and enthusiastically with her dog friends. In fact, she enjoys their company the most (especially from her foster sister, Hope)! Because of this, she would love to go to a home with another dog friend. Dogs are Karly's best friends, and cats could be as well. She does tends to bark at them, but doesn't proceed to attack. She needs constant reinforcement, but she is a quick-witted girl, so we think she will easily understand that she should not continue to bark at cats. In addition, Karly is certainly a sweet and friendly dog with people. She may be slightly hesitant at first, but if your hand is outstretched to give her a pet, she'll ease in right under it and become your best friend! Really, within minutes, she is approaching people and asking for pets all-around. She is great with both men and women, and she will also be very good with children.
Karly is learning more everyday! She LOVES her walks and although she might excitedly prance around with joy at the sight of the leash, she has learned to settle down after a few moments by sitting and patiently waiting for it to be put on her. Karly is an excellent walker! When she's out on them, she is super as she hardly pulls. She even ignores all of the neighbors' barking dogs as she passes them in their yards. In terms of commands, Karly is learning the basics fairly well. She knows what 'sit,' lay down,' and 'paw' mean so far.
She is mostly crate-trained, and she will go into it when asked to "go kennel." What she would really like more than anything is to be on the move and on an adventure somewhere. She would like a forever home/family who would take her on walks at least twice a day (30-40 minutes each), or better yet, someone to take her on outings to dog beach, dog park, on hikes, or runs.
Karly's foster mom thinks she is amazing! She is not food or toy aggressive whatsoever, and is so gentle and loving it's just astonishing this girl has not found her home yet. Please give Karly a chance! If you have any further questions and would like to get to know Karly more, contact her foster parent, but remember that you will need to fill out an application prior to meeting her at her foster home in Chula Vista (or at a scheduled adoption event).
