As you can see from Sammy's pic he is ADORABLE!
He is a sweet natured 66 lb Lab mix with maybe a little of Golden Retriever. He was an owner relinquishment in January of 2011. A volunteer noticed a family had him tied out in the yard (illegally) for what we we discovered to be for almost 8 months! They had purchased him from a breeder when he was just a puppy and since no one in the family had time or interest in training him they thought it would be easier to keep him as a yard dog attached to a tree with a rope and chain. He has a thick scar around his neck but it has fortunately healed and we are happy to report that even though his body will be scarred for life, Sammy is a great, goofy, people and dog loving pal.
His spirit is alive and he is so eager to meet new people and dogs - big and small!
Because Sammy didn't have a normal healthy start in life he requires a home and family who will be able to teach him what a well-behaved dog needs to do in order to be a part of the family. He will need training and obedience classes, an experienced owner who will not be discouraged by his strength and lack of training.
We can say without a doubt he will learn the rules very quickly as in just a few days he has improved and we can tell he is eager to learn because he is so food motivated and learns quickly.
We recomend a home with a large yard, an active dog owner (hicking, running, etc) and maybe even another dog in the home who he can learn from.
We would love to find a foster home or adoptive home soon or maybe someone who will like to adopt but would first like to try it out for couple weeks to see if the is the right canine companion. We would prefer an experienced dog owner because Sammy is strong and will pull on the leash hence a halti or other leash/collar made specifically to help him minimize the pulling while he learns some long overdue manners.
If you have the time and energy to help him develop into the great dog he will be, you will be pleased and rewarded with the love that this handsome fellow is just WAITING to offer. Call us to schedule a play date, help us give Sammy an opportunity at a normal life!
