Meet Aggie!

Aggie is a social and loving shepherd with the intelligence of a German Shepherd or Belgian Malinois, but of course we haven’t done a DNA test.  What we do know is that this sweet girl is amazing!  In fact, check out the latest update from her current foster family:

“Turns out Aggie bonds hard and fast. She learns quickly from humans and dogs. It only took a couple pieces of dry dog food for her to master 2 different types of dog doors. She "waits" on command at doors and gates and is making great progress loose-leash walking. Never had an accident in the house, if she can't get out (dog doors are locked at sunset) she lets us know when she needs to "go". She is a toy destroyer, but has no interest in chewing shoes, furniture, rugs, etc. We live on a canyon and have gophers, squirrels and voles in the backyard. She targets their holes and digs when she catches a whiff of them (she doesn't dig in the front yard where they are not living).  Aggie is fast and STRONG! Probably not a good fit for kids under 12, as she's very physical. We're working on her jumping to greet us. Our other dog is smaller and was hesitant to play, but Aggie figured out that if she was "gentle" they could play together. She is very food motivated, she takes treats gently and will wait her turn. We first fed her in her crate to prevent any issues. After 2 meals, she "got it" and is totally respectful of the other dogs' food. She goes into her crate to wait for her food. She accepts the established canine hierarchy.

She is very protective but takes cues from our other dog. She reserves her big bark for serious situations. She is selective about dogs we meet on walks. She's also selective about men. Anybody with a big hat or wielding a lawn tool gets a warning from her. With love and the right introduction she'd be a total dude dog. She would likely excel at agility training. She has good recall off-leash and listens when corrected. She loves to play ball, chase toys or just be with you. She settles down in the evening for tv time.”

Aggies is the perfect mid-sized shepherd mix at approximately 35 pounds.  She is very flexible, so having a home with a yard and a doggie friend would be great.  However, we believe with the right adopter, she also would do quite well living in an apartment setting.  She enjoys car rides and LOVES all dog toys, especially playing fetch with a ball.  She is amazing when she plays fetch because she brings it to you and drops it in front of you right away. Aggie would make a great dog park goer, but she would also be content as long as her adopter provides mental stimulation at home with toys and puzzles, such as tug-of-war or fetch.  Like all dogs, she enjoys daily or occasional walks and regular exercise.  Aggies aims to please humans and although she has not lived with children, she has spent a lot of time cuddling with and enjoying pets from kids she meets at adoption events where volunteers bring their children.  If you adopt this gorgeous girl, you will score big time!  She is smart and active, so we encourage her adoptive family to sign up for basic dog training.

If we had to rate Aggie on a scale of 1-5 for typical dog behaviors, this would be our rating:

  • Interaction with other DOGS:  4 – she gets along with some dogs faster than others, depending on their personality.   She has never shown aggression toward any sex/breed/age of other dogs.

  • Interaction with CATS:  3 – She has had a couple of kitty friends at her previous foster home, but if you have a shy kitty that runs and hides, they may not be a good match.

  • Interaction with CHILDREN: 4 – We are not giving her a score of 5 only because she has not lived with kids, but has always been extremely friendly with the children she meets at adoption/social events.

  • Vocalization:  4 – She rarely barks unless she needs to alert you about something.

  • Separation Anxiety:  5 – She has never exhibited any of this behavior.

  • Energy Level: 3 – She can go for a 3-5 mile hike, but she will be OUT for the rest of the day.  She loves to play with her toys and interact with humans and other dogs.  She likes to run and jump around, but is content to just chill and rest too.

If you would like to ONLY foster Aggie with NO interest in adopting, please fill out an online foster application.  If you would like to adopt her or foster her with the intention of adopting her, please submit an online adoption application.  We typically schedule a meet and greet within 48 hours in the 92111 zip code area.  Or you can attend one of our adoption events or social events, such as our Pack Hikes, to spend more time with Aggie without the need to submit an application before meeting her.  If you have any questions, please email us at animalrescuers@icloud.com to receive additional information.  You can find our online application, specifics about our adoption/social events, and more information about our adoptable animals at www.arwog.org  Don’t wait!  Aggied is really excited to meet
