Meet Darling!
This beautiful, full grown, medium sized breed is what we call a Mexican “supermutt.” She is 28 pounds and has a fantastic, submissive, easy going, and loving personality. She is great with dogs, cats and kids. She is a little intimidated by cats, but as long as they give her space to adjust, she will come around to trust them. She is a "waggy tail,” loving cuddler, who would do great with any family or working adult.
Darling was rescued by her foster mom, a retiree who was traveling in Jalisco, Lake Chapala in March-April 2021 and encountered this girl running around an empty field. She was skin and bones and her rescuer couldn't leave her behind or look into it how she ended up there. There is a longer story as to how she came to ARWOB’s care, but it’s the same old sad story, like so many other dogs we rescue from Mexico. Darling was a stray, unwanted, and ignored. She was taken to the vet and they discovered she was only 17 pounds (half what her weight should had been). She had a horrible cough and eye discharge. She was also spayed by the veterinarian before being flown to San Diego. Once she arrived in San Diego, we were able to get her the medical care she needed and we found out she had a severe case of pneumonia. It’s been a couple of months since she’s been on antibiotics and as of 8/10, she is off all medications. She has been doing great since July, but we still need one last set of Xrays to make sure nothing comes back from her pneumonia once her antibiotics have been finished.
Darling’s veterinarian said she is healthy and ready for adoption. However, adopters should be aware that there is a chance her lungs will never look "normal" because of the trauma of her being sick for so long. We know for a fact had she not been rescued by her foster, she would have died in that field because she would not have received a simple treatment that would make her better. It’s likely that being she lived on the streets during rainy season, she ended up getting sick. The great news is she recovered pretty quickly after being put on medication and has had an amazing appetite! She likes to run around off leash with a couple of her doggy friends in the apartment complex where her foster lives. She is an excellent co-pilot, who enjoys car rides. She is not a barker and she is house trained and crate trained.
Darling is a well rounded dog who is READY to be adopted now! She will be getting her 4th and final Xray around 9/10/21, to make sure her lungs are completely cleared up after being off the medication for a month. Therefore, her adopter will need to transport her back to ARWOB for this appointment (we will be paying for the Xray service). If Darling’s past and her previous medical care does not scare you and you believe she would be a good match for you/your family, please submit an online adoption application at www.arwob.org. Don’t wait!
