Meet Georgie!

Georgie's current foster family will be traveling in a few weeks, so we are in dire need of a new foster, or better yet an adopter!!  We offer a foster-to-adopt option for approved applicants who would like to give Georgie a chance!

We are looking for an experienced adopter for this adorable boy.  He needs to build his confidence around new people and new situations.  He does take some time to settle in when he arrives into a new home situation and will chew on things inside his crate.  He is still a young pup with chewing needs, so good Kong brand bedding and toys would be best for him because he loves his toys or even a plastic bottle to chew on.  He is pretty good on a leash, but would benefit from basic dog training. He can be mellow yet also active, depending on what the situation is. He LOVES dog toys and sharing them with others.

UPDATE 7/29/21:  Georgie has been with a foster for a 2 weeks now.  Here is the latest update from his foster mom:

“Georgie is a sweetheart and is looking for love and a human to call his own. Unfortunately at my house he is #2, as my dog Trek is very jealous and protective of our home and family. Trek is constantly telling Georgie his place. Poor Georgie takes it all in stride and puts up with him in a mostly gently way. Sometimes i have to break them up but in all honesty Trek is the aggressor and Georgie tries to be gentle.  By day 3 he has been getting into his crate on his own as soon as he knows it is nap time or sleep time . He does not like a pad and doesn’t seem to want a toy in there but definitely needs/wants a good something to chew on.  Initially he pulled so hard on the leash when we walked that he would wear himself out quickly.  About a week ago I bought him an Easy Walk harness and now he is so good on a walk or hike and now is up to 6 miles because he is not wearing himself out.  He loves to go for a walk! The Easy Walk harness will go with him to his forever home.  He is great with recall! If distracted by other dogs, he may hesitate, but only for a few seconds and he comes when called.  He only had one accident in the last 13 days. He goes pee and poo 1st thing in the morning before I feed him.  Off leash he is great around other dogs! On leash, his hackles go up, but he is not aggressive. It takes just a minute or two before he is good with other dogs if not immediately.  He is a little apprehensive with new people at first, but quickly warms up.  However, he is protective of me and our home. He very slow to warm up to people at my house.  Georgie hasn’t had very many interactions with kids. He is apprehensive at first and doesn’t like kids coming to him. He’s better taking his time and getting comfortable with them. In general he does not like direct contact or movement above his head. He is much better with kids and adults who come down to his level or hand contact coming from the ground up. Again, no aggression, just apprehension and backing up on his part.  I think he would be ok with kids once he trusted them but it may take a little while to build that trust. I don’t think he would be good with young kids [we recommend older, considerate children]. He needs calm and slow movements with people of any age.” 

Here is what his foster mom originally had to report within the first week of fostering him:

“Trek and Georgie chased after each other a bit and are not settled down.  They are getting along fine.  I just took them both for a walk, only 2 miles, but it went well.  Georgie started to pull, but by the last half mile, he and trek were walking side by side at a nice pace.  He always has some tension on the leash, but he really never pulls or lunges, even when he saw rabbits, birds, lizards.  When we got back he had a bath (did not like it) and then rested in his crate.  He was apprehensive about getting close to other dogs, but a few more outings and he will be fine.  He is really good with me, but he is much better coming to me than me going to him.  He’s still apprehensive around people and if they move toward him he will back away.  He is very sweet and gentle, but still not outgoing with people.  He is not mean or growly/barky, but he will usually back up first and then come when he is ready.  He follows me around wherever I go and he and Trek are my shadows.  Georgie comes and puts his head right by my head for ear/head rubs.  When I say “let’s go for a walk,” Georgie is in my face and ready to go!  I took him out to Shelter Island for a walk where there are lots of people.  We took a hike in Laguna Mountains.  He still has a lot to improve while on leash, but he is making improvements.  Although his hackles come up, he really is great with people and dogs on trail.  He will wait until they go by and will not pull, lunge, growl or bark.  He does tire quickly, though.  Trek, Georgie, and I recently met some friends and their dog at a restaurant for breakfast.  At first Georgie was very alert, watching all the people coming and going, but he was SO good!  A few people even asked if they could pet him and he was good.  Before long he sat down and then laid down.  It was a super busy place with lots of people and quite a few other dogs.  Georgie did amazingly well!”
