UPDATE 6/24
toby is a great little guy, ENERGETIC, always ready to play with a dog friend and a very quiet dog, rarely barks/whines as long as there is structure. We haven't seen the mouthy behavior previous foster noted so perhaps he would do best in a home with another dog and a yard to play. He can get a bit excited and try to hump some of the dogs so a tolerant dog or one to correct him, he can also play like a hearding dog by 'grabbing' the other dogs legs and try to entince play very playful. Seems good with cats inside home but may chase outside cats.
UPDATE #2 on 5/26/20: Toby has had a very hard life. He is over the moon that he doesn't have that life anymore, but of course it has created some behavior issues. Here is what his foster family has told us about Toby’s strengths and weaknesses over the past 2 weeks he has been with them:
Pros:
1) He does well in his crate, with minimal crying or fussing when you leave him. He is not destructive while in the crate. He sleeps well in his crate at night and is patient in the morning to go outside.
2) He plays well with soft toys and is learning fetch.
3) He is smart!
4) He walks well on a leash.
5) He occasionally will bark at the door if he senses someone outside but stops once instructed and will settle down and relax.
6) He is potty trained for the house.
7) He does well when meeting other dogs while on leash during walks.
Cons:
1) He is “mouthy” when he gets excited, gets around new people, or wants attention. This is not malicious, nor does it break the skin.
2) He will hump some dogs when off leash.
3) He has a lot of energy and needs to be kept entertained often.
4) He will run off if he is let off leash and he thinks it’s a game of chase.
5) He can be mischievous at times and will steal blankets or socks to play with.
Toby has been around men, but he was so distracted by other dogs it was hard to tell how he reacts to men. He is fine when walking by men.
Toby tends to become “mouthy” when he gets excited and will “gently chew” on your hand or arm, so he needs to be corrected and it will take a few months to get this situation under control. This could pose a problem for a family with children or someone who is easily bruised or has sensitive skin. He does respond to a firm “No,” but he will need a lot of work and repetition to correct his behavior.
We are looking for a patient adopter that is willing to work with Toby to overcome some of his bad habits. We recommend a “foster to adopt” situation for 2 weeks to make sure the new adopter feels up to the challenge.
UPDATE #1 on 5/20/20: Here is the update we have received from his foster family:
“Toby is doing great with his house training! He is potty trained and we have had no indoor accidents since day 2 with me. He is full of energy and loves to go on walks. He does well on the leash. He would probably benefit from having a yard to run around and let out some energy. He’s learning the basic commands. Still needs lots of work and patience. He is sweet and loves attention.”
Original Rescue Story:
Meet Toby! Toby is a recently rescued young adult who can be anywhere between 2-5 years of age from denture and attitude. He was rescued when a good sam who is also a rescuer walked down a street and noticed this guy tied out in the property. She approached the family and asked if they would be interested in relinquishing him to her and they did. Toby is now neutered and has received any medical update he needs. He is living with his rescuer and typically stays outside on the patio when she is gone as she has her personal dogs and has not had time to work with him on training or house training. We are looking for an adopter or foster who is able to help Toby through the ropes of being a family dog and learn to enjoy everything that comes with having a family. You can see his before and after pics and a very sweet loving dog who is learning to enjoy life and is doing well around people and other dogs. Not sure how he would do around cats not tested yet. To meet Toby submit an application at arwob.org
