UPDATE 7/7/20:

After consulting with another vet specialist, the decision was made to remove the plates and pins in Bean's leg (rather than to amputate).  His foster family has said that he is doing really well after his surgery and is no longer limping or favoring his leg.  However, if he should reinjure his leg in the future, amputation may be necessary.  That is why he will need to ONLY engage in low-key exercise, such as visiting the dog park or going for normal walks.  He will need to avoid long hikes or long runs. Here is a recent update from his foster family:

• Food: Currently eating a small breed food with a bit of wet food mixed in - and he's LOVING it! Definitely prefers smaller bites / easier to chew food.
• Treats: Particular about treats... won't take it from your hand the first time. Likes cheese, meat, popcorn and jerky treats. Does not like peanut butter...
• Toys: LOVES small toys - doesn't really play with them, just likes carrying them around and snuggling with them. He has a llama toy he'll take to his new home.
• Walks/Outdoor Time: Loves walks, but can be very vocal on them (whining, barking when he sees a dog), but with continuous training he'll do great. Must wear a harness on walks. We've taken him to dog parks and a dog beach, while he doesn't fully know recall commands yet, he was loving the freedom of running around with other dogs.
• Other dogs: He is still figuring out how to play with other dogs, but really does enjoy being around other pups. He's a bit nervous around bigger dogs but is okay with those that are more mellow.

UPDATE 6/8/20:

Cocoa-Bean has been taken to a local San Diego board certified veterinarian surgeon to have a physical exam and X-rays. ARWOB has just found out that the surgery Cocoa-Bean had done in Ensenada Mexico in April 2019, was NOT done by a licensed veterinarian. He had been rescued with a fracture to his hind leg and the unlicensed vet decided to place plates and pins in that leg without any real experience in performing that type of surgery. The good Sam that rescued and cared for Cocoa-Bean just trusted that vet and went along with the recommended treatment. ARWOB agreed to take Cocoa-Bean from the kind person who rescued him after an entire year had passed. Now that he has been in foster care in San Diego since May 2020, his foster family realized he is a fantastic and very well-behaved dog. However, we started to wonder if he is just really mellow or if he is actually in pain. His foster noticed that although he uses his hind leg, he would start to skip and hop after running around with his doggie friends. As the adoption applications started to come in for Cocoa-Bean, we decided we should take him in for a consultation exam with a qualified specialist to find out the actual status of the plate and pins in his hind leg. It was determined by the qualified vet that Cocoa-Bean is actually feeling pain and discomfort, especially when touching the injured leg. At this point the options would be (1) performing a very extensive surgery (costing anywhere between $10,000-$20,000) with 2-4 months of recovery and a lot of follow up vet visits that may or may not work; or (2) amputate the leg so that we know for sure he will no longer be in pain. 

UPDATE 5/22/20:

Here is the update we have received from his foster family: "Beans" (as we've nicknamed him) has settled in nicely to the comforts of home life! He enjoys his daily routine of napping inside, napping outside in the sunshine, walks through the park, belly rubs and learning manners for jerky treats. He's fairly quiet and keeps to himself, but greatly appreciates snuggles & pets! Beans would do well in a relaxed environment with a family who will be gentle and shower him with all the pets he deserves! Some other things we've learned about him: picky eater (loves FreshPet food though), loves walks, doesn't shed, needs to wear a harness as he can slip out of a collar, not a fan of big dogs on walks, not into toys or bones, sleeps great in a crate, and loves being outside.”

ORIGINAL RESCUE STORY:

Cocoa Bean was rescued by a good Sam in January of 2019 when he noticed a little wet dog with very matted coat limping and dragging his left hind leg. He stopped the car, picked him up, and took him to the nearest veterinary clinic. The Xrays showed a fractured hind leg and the good Sam took him to a vet for surgery and medical care. Fast forward a year and he requested help with his adoption since he was not able to find a home himself in Mexico for fear Cocoa Bean would end up in a home that would again allow him to roam the streets of Ensenada. He contacted ARWOB for help and Cocoa Bean is new to the group. Cocoa is healthy and will have a slight limp on his back leg as they had placed a metal plate in his leg to fix the fracture. He can still run around and walk, but he will not be a great exercise partner as he shouldn't be a hiking or running partner. He will be happy to walk neighborhoods and run around a yard or patio with his friends.
